| Kindergarten is the beginning of a formal
education. I have been helping students make that beginning at Ware
Elementary since the school opened in 1983. My experiences include
preschool through third grade, a Bachelors degree in Education from
Concordia Teachers College and a Masters degree in Curriculum and
Instruction from Kansas State University.
Reading instruction has several components to provide a good foundation. Our Success For All Program includes phonemic awareness, letter investigation, language development, concepts of print, writing, and a phonemics approach to reading. Students are expected to read each night for 20 minutes. This is implemented in the context of themes. Some of our favorites are Dinosaurs, Healthy Me, and Community Helpers. Science and Social Studies concepts are introduced through these themes. The goal of our math program is to teach students to think mathematically seeing patterns in math and in everyday surroundings. The students learn number concepts, geometry, measurement, and problem solving. Assessments occur at the beginning of the year, mid-term, and reading and math criterion reference tests in April. This is in addition to a quarterly report card. |
